How does EZRGB map my sequences from xLights?

Recommended Image

If you already have an xLights display, moving into EZRGB doesn’t mean rebuilding your layout or manually mapping every prop from scratch. EZRGB uses the information already stored in your xLights show files to understand your display, build its own representation of your layout, and map sequences to the props you already have.

So, **how does EZRGB know what is in your xLights display and where all those effects are supposed to go?**

It Starts With Your xLights Show Files

Your xLights setup contains important information about your display. This includes the models and props you have created, how they are organized, groups and submodels, and information about how your display is connected.

To give EZRGB the information it needs, you upload two files from your xLights show folder:

xlights_rgbeffects.xml contains the information EZRGB needs to understand your xLights layout, including your models, groups, submodels, and other layout information.

xlights_network.xml provides the network and controller information associated with your show.

Instead of asking you to recreate all of this information manually on the EZRGB website, these files allow EZRGB to analyze the display you have already built.

Step 1: Locate Your xLights Files

Start by locating the Show Folder you currently use with xLights.

Inside that folder, locate:

xlights_rgbeffects.xml
xlights_network.xml

These are XML files, but you don’t need to open them, edit their code, or understand what is inside them. EZRGB handles that part for you.

One important tip: upload the files from the xLights show folder you actually use. If you have old show folders or backups on your computer, make sure you aren’t accidentally uploading an outdated copy.

Step 2: Upload the Files to EZRGB

Next, sign into your account on the EZRGB website.

Go to My Account the My Layout to upload your xLights RGB effects and network files where prompted.

Once EZRGB has those files, the system can begin analyzing your existing xLights layout.

This is one of the major differences between EZRGB and the traditional process of adapting purchased sequences. Instead of requiring you to manually tell every sequence where each effect belongs, EZRGB can use your existing layout information to do much of that work automatically.

Step 3: EZRGB Learns Your Layout

After your files have been uploaded, EZRGB analyzes the models, groups, submodels, and other information contained in your xLights configuration.

Think of this as giving EZRGB a blueprint of your display.

Your house may have rooflines, windows, arches, singing props, snowflakes, a mega tree, matrices, or dozens of other props. Another EZRGB user’s display might be completely different.

That is exactly why the layout files are so important.

EZRGB isn’t simply sending everyone the exact same rendered sequence. It needs to understand your layout so the sequence can be mapped and rendered for the display you actually own.

Step 4: EZRGB Maps the Sequence to Your Props

This is where EZRGB takes over much of the work that traditionally required experience inside sequencing software.

EZRGB analyzes the sequence and your layout and determines how the sequence’s programming should be applied to your display.

The system can create and work with groups and submodels and account for differences between layouts. It can even resolve many situations involving props that are physically reversed or facing a different direction.

That makes it possible for two people with different house layouts to use the same sequence while receiving a render designed around their individual displays.

You aren’t learning someone else’s layout simply so you can figure out how to transfer it into yours.

EZRGB is doing the mapping for you.

Step 5: EZRGB Renders the Finished Sequence

Once EZRGB knows your layout and your sequence selections, it can render the sequences specifically for your display.

The result is a finished FSEQ file that contains the data needed to play the lighting sequence on your mapped layout.

That removes one of the biggest barriers for people who enjoy animated holiday lighting but don’t necessarily want to become advanced xLights programmers.

PRO TIP- If you are going to use EZPlayer as your show player it will automatically download your rendered sequences from EZRGB.

What About Singing Faces?

Singing props are a little different because homeowners don’t all use the same characters or want the same props performing the same parts.

EZRGB gives you control over those choices.

After your sequence is available in your account, go to:

My Account → My Sequences

From My Sequences, you can update the singing-face options for that individual sequence.

This is useful when a sequence contains multiple vocal parts or when you want different singing props in your display handling those parts.

The important distinction is that My Sequences is where you make sequence-specific changes.

You don’t have to alter your entire layout simply because you want to change how the singing faces are handled for one song.

What If I Want to Change My Overall Layout?

Sometimes the change isn’t about one particular sequence.

Maybe you’ve changed something about your display and want that change to apply when your sequences are rendered going forward.

That’s when you’ll use My Layout.

Go to:

My Account → My Layout → Edit Layout

Inside Edit Layout, you can make global layout and rendering changes.

This gives you two different levels of control:

My Sequences is for changes associated with an individual sequence, including singing-face selections.

My Layout → Edit Layout is for changes you want applied globally to your layout and future renders.

That separation is important because it allows you to customize one song without unnecessarily changing everything else.

xLights remains an incredibly powerful tool for creating and designing synchronized lighting. EZRGB takes a different approach to what happens after a sequence has been created*: it makes getting that programming onto an individual homeowner’s display much easier.*

Why Automatic Mapping Matters

Traditionally, buying a sequence doesn’t necessarily mean it is immediately ready for your house.

The person who created the sequence probably doesn’t have your exact roofline, props, pixel counts, groups, or physical arrangement. That means effects have to be transferred from the creator’s layout to yours.

Experienced xLights users can do that themselves, but it can be intimidating for someone building their first show and time consuming.

EZRGB changes that workflow.

Instead of requiring every homeowner to learn advanced sequence importing and mapping before they can enjoy a professionally programmed show, EZRGB uses their existing layout information to automate much of the process.

And if something needs to change later, you still have control through My Sequences and My Layout to change render options.

Your xLights Layout Can Become an EZRGB Layout

If you’ve already spent time building your display in xLights, you don’t need to start over just to use EZRGB.

Upload your xlights_rgbeffects.xml and xlights_network.xml files, let EZRGB learn your display, customize individual singing-face choices under My Account → My Sequences, and make global rendering changes through My Account → My Layout → Edit Layout.

EZRGB was built to remove much of the repetitive technical work between getting a sequence and seeing it running on your actual house.

Try EZRGB with your existing xLights layout and see how much easier mapping and rendering your next sequence can be.

Frequently Asked Questions

What files do I need to upload from xLights?

EZRGB requires xlights_rgbeffects.xml and xlights_networks.xml from your current xLights Show Folder.

Do I have to edit the XML files before uploading them?

No. Normally, you simply locate the files in your Show Folder and upload them. You don’t need to understand or manually edit the XML code.

Where do I change my singing faces?

For singing-face selections associated with a particular sequence, go to My Account → My Sequences and select the sequence you want to change.

Where do I make changes that should affect my entire layout?

Go to My Account → My Layout → Edit Layout. This is where you can make global mapping and rendering changes.

What should I do after changing my layout in xLights?

If you’ve made changes that affect your layout or controller configuration, upload the latest xlights_rgbeffects.xml and xlights_networks.xml files so EZRGB is working with your current display information and re-renders all sequences.
